Does Energy Healing Require Forgiveness First? What I’ve Seen in Real Healing Journeys

By Eli Mercer on

This is a question that comes up often in holistic healing spaces, and the answers usually swing between two extremes: either “you must forgive first” or “forgiveness doesn’t matter at all.” What I’ve observed is more nuanced than both. Many people start energy-based practices like Reiki, meditation, or breathwork while still carrying unresolved emotional experiences. That can include anger, grief, regret, or long-standing emotional patterns that were never fully processed. In that state, healing work can feel uneven or emotionally intense at times. Not because something is “wrong” with the practice, but because different layers of emotional experience tend to surface as awareness increases. One important distinction I’ve learned is that forgiveness is often misunderstood. It is not about excusing harm or forcing yourself to be okay with what happened. And it is not something that needs to be completed before healing can begin. Instead, for many people, it begins internally noticing how much emotional weight is still being carried and gently shifting how they relate to themselves in those memories and reactions. Self-forgiveness often becomes part of that process too, especially around how someone coped during difficult periods in their life. Over time, as people continue practices like meditation or energy work, there is often more emotional clarity and less internal resistance. But this doesn’t happen in a straight line, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone. Healing is not about forcing emotional resolution. It’s about gradually rebuilding connection with yourself in a way that feels safe and sustainable. For some people, forgiveness appears along the way. For others, it’s not the focus at all, and both experiences are valid.
