I had a really embarrassing accident at work because I couldn’t leave my desk in time

This is honestly something I didn’t think I’d ever talk about, but it happened and it made me rethink how much pressure I was putting on myself at work.
I work in an environment where breaks aren’t always easy to take. There are days when I’m so locked into tasks or meetings that I keep postponing going to the restroom, telling myself I’ll go “after this one thing.” Over time, that started adding up more than I realized.
One day in particular, it got out of control. I had been holding it in for far too long, and by the last hour or so of my shift, I was struggling just to stay focused. I knew I needed to leave my desk, but I kept pushing through because I didn’t want to interrupt what I was doing.
Eventually, I couldn’t hold it anymore and had an accident while still at work. I managed to get to my office quickly since I had some privacy, but I was already overwhelmed and just tried to leave as discreetly as possible and get home.
When I got home, I cleaned up and had to go back later after hours to sort out my workspace. It was honestly one of the most uncomfortable moments I’ve had in a professional setting.
What I learned from it
That experience forced me to realize something simple but important. No job should make you ignore basic needs to the point where your health or dignity is affected.
Since then, I’ve started being more intentional about stepping away when I need to, even if work feels urgent. Most things can wait a few minutes, but your well-being shouldn’t.
