My friend was fired without warning right after the holidays

A friend of mine was let go this week completely out of the blue.
No warning, no feedback, no conversation. He was on his way home from a shift when he received an email saying his employment was terminated. His final paycheck will come in two weeks.
What hurts most is that he genuinely liked the job. He thought he’d finally found a healthy work environment where he felt respected and safe. Management constantly praised his performance, how quickly he learned, and his passion for hospitality.
Then, two weeks into the new year, he was gone. This was not a seasonal role. He was hired as a permanent employee, which makes it feel like they kept him through the holidays and cut him loose once things slowed down.
I know at-will employment is common in the U.S., but it’s still tough to process when you’re told you’re doing great and then fired without explanation.
He’s updating his resume and applying again. Rough way to start the year. Any insight is appreciated.
