I got laid off… but still ended up being the only one asked to stay

By JugglingNothing on

This happened at a startup I worked for when the company missed key contracts and had to lay off about half the team. I was included in that group and given severance, with a 4-week notice period to wrap things up.

Two weeks in, a critical system issue came up on the other side of the US. The local teams couldn’t resolve it, and I asked my manager if I could step in since I had originally installed the system. I flew out the night before, worked onsite the next day, and flew back the same night.

I identified the problem and fixed it.

After that, I spent my remaining time documenting everything I had worked on over the years to make future transitions easier.

In my final week, HR reached out and told me the company had secured a long-pending contract and was rebuilding part of the team. I was the only person asked to return.

My boss later told me he was impressed that even during a layoff period, I stayed engaged and solved problems that prevented additional cost and downtime.
