Lessons From Raising an Autistic Child
By Charlotte on
Parenting is never simple, but raising an autistic child with challenging behaviors has taught lessons that go far beyond what anyone could prepare for.
My 11-year-old son is on the spectrum, and lately his aggression has felt overwhelming kicking, shouting, pushing back against every rule. He says things in anger that I know he doesn’t truly mean, but the words still hurt. Now, as his younger brothers start to copy his outbursts, it sometimes feels like chaos is taking over our home.
For a long time, I blamed myself. I felt like I was failing as a mother. But slowly, I’ve started to see things differently.
I used to think I had to handle everything myself. But reaching out to therapists, respite providers, and parent communities has given me strength and reminded me I’m not alone.
It’s still hard. Some days, it feels like I can’t do this for another moment. But I’m learning that parenting a child with autism isn’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up, learning, and adapting, even on the days when it feels like you’re barely keeping your head above water.
To other parents: how have you managed aggression or defiance in your autistic child? What strategies, supports, or resources have made a real difference for your family?
