Christmas is fun… but why is it so loud? ( a vent holiday edition) 🤪
By JugglingNothing on
I get that it’s Christmas, the lights, the music, the family gatherings, the food, the joy all of it. I want to enjoy the season. But the constant loudness? The shouting across rooms, the laughter that turns into screaming, the TV blaring while music plays and five conversations happen at once my brain just taps out.
The world already feels loud on a normal day. December just cranks it to eleven.
As someone on the spectrum, noise isn’t just “annoying.” It’s physically overwhelming. My body reacts before my thoughts do my shoulders tense, my head aches, and suddenly I’m fighting the urge to shut down or disappear into the quietest corner of the house. The hardest part is pretending I’m fine so I don’t ruin the “holiday vibe.”
At the same time, I’m learning. I know I can’t expect the world or Christmas to be silent. People express joy loudly. Kids get excited. Families get chaotic. That’s part of it. So I’m trying to meet the season halfway: stepping outside when I need to, using headphones, setting boundaries, and reminding myself that being overwhelmed doesn’t mean I’m failing.
Transitioning to new environments, louder spaces, and different expectations is hard but I’m growing. Slowly. Intentionally.
I just wish more people understood that when I ask for quiet, I’m not being rude or grumpy. I’m regulating. I’m surviving the noise so I can stay present for the moments that actually matter.
Otherwise a Merry Christmas to y'all!
