January 2026 Thoughts: Trying something gentler this year
By Real Ray C on
Every January, it feels like the same message gets blasted everywhere: fix yourself, level up, do more, be better. New routines, strict goals, big expectations about who you’re supposed to become by December. I’ve bought into that mindset before, and honestly, it usually just leaves me exhausted.
So this year, I’m trying a different approach. Instead of pushing myself to constantly improve or optimize, I’m focusing on changes that I can actually keep up with.
For me, that means paying attention to what wears me down and what helps me feel steady. Taking breaks before I’m completely overwhelmed. Using things that help me stay calm without feeling guilty about it. Leaving situations early when I need to, instead of forcing myself to “power through” and dealing with the fallout later.
It also means letting go of the idea that progress has to look impressive to other people. I’m tired of judging myself based on how normal, productive, or put-together I seem. Sometimes growth is quieter than that. Sometimes it’s just knowing your limits and respecting them.
I’m also making space for the things I genuinely enjoy, even if they don’t look practical or productive on paper. The stuff that helps me reset, focus, and feel like myself. I spent a long time thinking I needed to outgrow those things, but I’m starting to realize they’re actually part of what keeps me grounded.
As we get into 2026, I’m curious how others are approaching this year. Are you setting gentler goals, or letting go of certain expectations altogether? What are you giving yourself permission to stop stressing about?

- Henry-001: This is great advice Ray. I stopped stressing about what I failed to perfect the last year. I am approaching the new year as another opportunity to learn and have fun doing it. I definitely aspire to do things but having crazy unattainable goals is another stress factor that I have decided to do away with. Happy new year !!
