How do you follow up on DMs without feeling awkward?

By JugglingNothing on

Have you ever been blue-ticked? Someone reads your message, you see it, and then… nothing. No reply. No reaction. Just silence. I know this happens to everyone, but it always hits me harder than I expect.

There are times when people DM me first, asking a question, starting a conversation, or following up on something important. I read the message, and in my head I fully intend to respond. But my brain needs time. I have to think through what to say, how to say it, and whether it sounds right. Sometimes I need to step away, calm myself, or come back later when my thoughts feel more organized.

Then hours pass. Or a day. And suddenly replying feels heavier than it should. I start worrying: Is it too late now? Will this seem rude? Should I apologize? Am I overthinking this? So instead of sending a simple response, I freeze and the message just sits there.

I’m trying to learn how to follow up without beating myself up. Sometimes I send a short message like, “Hey, I meant to reply earlier thanks for your patience.” Other times I remind myself that most people aren’t judging as harshly as I am.

I’m curious how others handle this. How do you follow up on messages when your brain needs extra processing time? How do you deal with the pressure of instant replies in a world that expects them?
