Does anyone else feel constantly misunderstood even by family?

By Eli Mercer on

The other day, I said something small. Nothing emotional. Nothing dramatic. Just a simple sentence that made sense in my head. I remember thinking, that was clear enough.

A few minutes later, I realized the conversation had gone somewhere I never intended. People were responding to things I didn’t say. Reacting to meanings I never meant. I tried to slow it down and explain, but that only seemed to confirm their version of the story, not mine. This happens a lot. Especially with my family.

I’ll say one thing, very literally, and somehow it turns into something loaded. Suddenly I’m accused of being rude, cold, or saying something hurtful. When I ask, “Can you tell me exactly what I said wrong?” the answer is usually vague. It’s not the words, they say. It’s the way I said them. Or the feeling behind them. A feeling I didn’t have.

Over time, moments like this pile up. They start to sink in. I walk away replaying conversations, wondering how my words can sound so different once they leave my mouth. I start questioning myself. Maybe I should’ve stayed quiet. Maybe it’s safer not to speak at all.

What hurts most is the feeling of being taken for granted. Like I’m expected to constantly translate myself, adjust myself, soften myself while no one pauses long enough to really hear what I’m trying to say. It makes me feel small. Replaceable. Like my voice doesn’t quite count. I’m not trying to cause problems. I’m just trying to be understood.

Some days I wish people would stop telling me what I “meant” and just ask me instead. I’m right here. I know what I said. And I know who I am even on the days it feels like no one else does.
