Celebrating women on the spectrum this month...
By Eli Mercer on
Since it’s March and we’re celebrating women, I wanted to take a moment to recognize the women in the autism community.
For a long time, autism conversations mostly focused on boys and men. Because of that, many autistic girls grew up misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or completely overlooked. Some women didn’t get diagnosed until adulthood after years of wondering why the world felt harder to navigate than it seemed for everyone else.
But despite all of that, so many autistic women continue to show incredible strength, creativity, empathy, and resilience. Many have had to learn how to advocate for themselves in systems that weren’t built with them in mind. Others are now helping younger girls get recognized and supported earlier than they were.
I’ve learned a lot just by listening to women in this community about masking, burnout, sensory experiences, and the unique pressures autistic women often face socially and professionally.
So this month I just want to say: your voices matter. Your experiences matter. And the autism community is stronger because of the women in it.
Happy Women’s Month to all the amazing women here.
