The Autism Trait That Explained More About Me Than Any Checklist Ever Did
By JugglingNothing on
When I first started learning about autism, I kept looking for the one trait that would explain everything.
The truth is, there isn't one. Every autistic person is different. But there was one pattern in my own life that suddenly made years of confusion make sense.
When something catches my interest, I don't just enjoy it.
I disappear into it. I'll spend hours reading about it, watching videos, looking up random facts, and asking questions that lead to even more questions. Before I know it, it's midnight and I've learned far more than I ever planned to.
The same thing happens with routines.
Once I find a system that works, I stick with it. I like knowing where things belong, what my day looks like, and what to expect. It's not because I can't handle change. It's because familiar routines leave me with more energy for everything else.
I've also realized I struggle to fake enthusiasm.
If a conversation feels forced, I probably won't have much to say. But ask me about something I genuinely care about, and suddenly I'm talking faster than my brain can keep up.
For years, I thought those things made me odd.
Now I see them as clues that helped me understand how my brain works. They aren't good or bad on their own. They're simply part of the way I experience the world.
Of course, I know this won't describe every autistic person.
That's one of the things I've come to appreciate about autism. We can share similar patterns while still having completely different personalities, interests, and lives.
I'm curious what trait made everything click for you.
Was there one moment where you thought, "That explains me better than I ever could?
