What's the most useless cooking hack you've ever tried?

By Real Ray C on

I feel like we're living in the golden age of unnecessary kitchen hacks. Every time I open Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, someone is claiming they've discovered a revolutionary new way to do something that's been working perfectly fine for decades. A while back, I saw a video that promised the fastest way to soften butter. The trick was to fill a glass with boiling water, pour the water out, and place the hot glass over a stick of butter. The video made it look brilliant. In reality, I ended up with butter that was partly softened, partly greasy, and still not quite ready for baking. Plus, I had an extra dish to wash. That's when I started noticing a pattern. A lot of viral cooking hacks seem less focused on solving problems and more focused on looking clever on camera. They often turn a simple task into a five-step process that somehow takes longer than the original method. Meanwhile, the best kitchen advice is usually the least exciting. Read the recipe before you start. Prep your ingredients. Taste your food while cooking. Give dough time to rest. Let meat rest before slicing. None of those tips get millions of views, but they consistently work. So now I'm curious.
