New Tech for Early Autism Screening. What It Means for Our Community

By JugglingNothing on

I came across this fascinating article about a breakthrough in autism screening technology developed by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute).

They’ve created a system that can detect early signs of autism spectrum disorder in young children simply by analysing short videos of them playing or interacting.

Why does this matter?

✅ Earlier Support:
The earlier autism is identified, the sooner families can get the therapies, accommodations, and resources they need. Early intervention can have a huge impact on communication skills, sensory processing, and social development.

✅ Lower Barriers:
Many families can’t access evaluations because of long waitlists, high costs, or a shortage of specialists, especially in rural areas. Video-based screening could help bridge that gap by making assessments more accessible.

✅ Data-Driven Insights:
This technology uses artificial intelligence to analyse facial expressions, gestures, and eye movement data that can sometimes be overlooked in traditional evaluations.

Of course, any tool like this has to be used ethically. Screening is just the first step.

Diagnosis and support still require human understanding and compassion.

But to me, this feels hopeful.

We talk a lot about how technology can alienate or overwhelm autistic people. It’s worth remembering that it can also empower us when it’s developed thoughtfully.

💬 I’d love to hear what you think:
