AI Is powerful but we need to teach our communities to spot fake content

I’ve been thinking a lot about how AI is changing the way we see the world for better and worse. People often talk about AI as this amazing tool that can do incredible things and it can. But we also need to be honest about the darker side of it.

Recently, I saw examples that really alarmed me. Some folks on X were using AI tools like Grok to create explicit images. And even worse, there are AI-generated videos showing people crying in Venezuela after a fake arrest of President Nicolás Maduro by the US military. These are completely fabricated, yet they look real to the casual viewer. This is not just “fun AI experiments” this is content that can easily mislead people who aren’t thinking critically about what they’re seeing online.

I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: AI is neutral. It can build, create, and educate, but it can also deceive, manipulate, and harm if it’s misused. The problem is that many people see something online and assume it’s true. That’s scary, and it can have real-world consequences.

We need to start teaching our communities friends, family, especially young people how to use AI responsibly, and how to critically evaluate what they see online. This means asking: Is this real? Could it be generated? Who made it? Why was it made?

Let’s use AI wisely. Let’s teach others to do the same.
