Is AI the dating ally neurodivergent people need?

By Real Ray C on

Just read about a new wave of dating apps that use AI to interview you and match you based on personality, not swipes and photos. The idea is to ditch the superficial swipe culture and focus on deeper compatibility which sounds nice on paper.

But as someone who’s watched friends use dating apps for years, this feels… complicated. For a lot of autistic people, typical apps aren’t just “annoying”, they’re exhausting. Endless small talk, trying to intuit social cues, and feeling like you’re invisible or misunderstood that’s not just a minor inconvenience, it’s deeply discouraging..

A lot of folks in the autistic subreddit have said dating apps often feel like a game you weren’t meant to play full of rapid judgments on photos, buried social cues, and silent drop-offs that hurt more than they should.

The question I keep having is: Will AI actually help people like us or just give us another algorithm to fit into a world that already feels alienating? It could be great if it genuinely understood us instead of just repackaging the same pressure in a fancier tech wrapper. But if it just pushes more “conversation coaching” or personality filters without addressing the real emotional and communication differences many autistic people experience, is it really progress?

I want to hear from neurodivergent folks here... do you think this kind of AI could actually make dating online feel less draining or more fair? Or is it just another tech buzzword dressed up in good intentions?
