Why humans will always be the programmers even in an AI future

By Real Ray C on

People keep saying AI will replace programmers, but that’s not how it works. AI can follow instructions incredibly well, but it can’t set its own goals, at least not anytime soon. Take something as simple as teaching a robot to eat spaghetti. The robot can optimize movements, learn from mistakes, and execute instructions, but someone has to define what “success” looks like. That’s your job as a programmer: deciding the goal, imagining the outcome, and translating it into instructions the machine can actually follow. Today, you have to be very specific. Tomorrow, AI might let you give broad, high-level directions. But the core principle remains the same: humans decide the task, AI does the execution. Smarter computers just make our instructions easier to give, they don’t replace the human imagination behind them. So no, AI won’t replace programmers. It will make us more efficient, not obsolete. The creative thinking, goal-setting, and planning, those are still all human jobs.
