Michael B. Jordan’s oscar win for Sinners feels like a long time coming

By Eli Mercer on

So I just saw the news that Michael B. Jordan won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in Sinners and honestly as someone who watches a lot of movies, it feels like one of those wins that was overdue. Jordan has been delivering strong performances for years. Ever since Fruitvale Station I felt like he was one of the most compelling actors working right now. Then he followed that up with the Creed movies and of course Black Panther where he played one of the most memorable villains in a superhero movie. From what I’ve read about Sinners, the role was pretty demanding because he had to play twin brothers with very different personalities. That kind of performance can easily fall apart if it’s not done right, so pulling it off convincingly is a big deal. As a regular movie fan, I also like when the Oscars recognize actors who have been consistently putting in great work for years instead of just rewarding one random performance. This win kind of feels like the industry finally acknowledging how strong Jordan has been for a long time. That said, the Best Actor category is always tough. Personally I could also see someone like Leonardo DiCaprio or Timothée Chalamet taking the award in a competitive year because they both tend to bring something unique to their roles. Still, I like seeing Jordan take it home. It’s always cool watching an actor grow over the years and then finally get that moment of recognition.
