Before Rocky and Rambo Made Him an Action Icon, Stallone Delivered This Forgotten Thriller

By JugglingNothing on

When people talk about Sylvester Stallone, the conversation usually starts and ends with Rocky Balboa or John Rambo. Those characters made him a legend, but they also caused many of his other performances to get overlooked. One movie that deserves more attention is Nighthawks (1981). What surprised me about this film is how different Stallone feels compared with the action hero image most people know today. He isn't playing an unstoppable fighting machine. He plays a New York detective dealing with a serious terrorist threat, and the movie builds tension through atmosphere, investigation, and suspense. Stallone's appearance is also completely different from the version audiences became familiar with later. The beard, longer hair, and quieter performance make him feel like a regular cop rather than a movie superstar. The biggest surprise is Rutger Hauer as Wulfgar. He doesn't play the villain as a cartoon character. Instead, he brings a calm and intimidating presence that makes him feel dangerous because of how controlled he is. Nighthawks feels like a bridge between the gritty crime thrillers of the 1970s and the bigger action movies that dominated the 1980s. It shows that Stallone was capable of more than just iconic one-liners and action scenes. Sometimes an actor's biggest roles become so famous that their other work disappears. What is your favorite Sylvester Stallone movie outside of Rocky and Rambo?
