Disney Just Announced Zootopia 3... Is It Too Soon for Another Sequel?
By Eli Mercer on
I honestly didn't expect Disney to announce Zootopia 3 this soon.
Zootopia 2 only came out in 2025, so I figured we'd be waiting several years before Disney even mentioned another movie. Instead, the studio just confirmed at D23 that a third movie is in the works, with Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan returning as Judy Hopps and Gary De'Snake.
My first reaction was actually pretty positive because I still think Zootopia is one of Disney's better modern animated worlds.
The original movie worked because Zootopia felt bigger than its story. You could see entire neighborhoods, different communities, different species, and social dynamics that the movie barely had time to explore. That gives Disney plenty of room to tell another story without simply copying the first movie.
But there is also a part of me wondering if they're moving too quickly.
One of the reasons animated sequels can be frustrating is that studios sometimes mistake a successful franchise for an endless supply of stories. I don't want Zootopia 3 to feel like Disney looked at the box office and immediately decided, "Let's make another one."
I'd rather they take their time and come up with a story that actually gives us something new.
And there are still so many possibilities. Zootopia has an entire city to explore, and Zootopia 2 already showed us that there are parts of this world we haven't seen before.
What I'm most curious about is whether Judy and Nick's relationship will remain the center of the story or whether Disney will use the third movie to introduce an entirely different part of the city and let them deal with a new kind of problem.
I'm cautiously excited.
I just hope this is a case of Disney having another genuinely good story ready rather than simply trying to keep a successful franchise alive.
Are you excited for Zootopia 3, or do you think Disney announced it way too soon?
