My new year’s resolution for 2026: Smaller goals, healthier expectations

By JugglingNothing on

As a new year rolls around, it feels almost automatic to sit down and write a long list of resolutions. We tell ourselves this will be the year we fix everything our habits, our finances, our health, our productivity. And while big goals can be motivating, I’ve learned something the hard way: not every resolution is realistic, and forcing them can quietly wreck your mental health.

Life changes. Circumstances change. Energy levels change. Sometimes the conditions just aren’t favorable, no matter how badly we want things to work out. And when we set huge expectations without room for flexibility, it’s easy to end up feeling like we’ve failed even when we’re actually doing our best.

Going into 2026, I’m trying a different approach.

I’m still setting goals, but I’m making sure they’re manageable. I want resolutions that fit into real life, not an ideal version of myself with unlimited time, money, and motivation. I’m allowing space to adjust when things don’t go as planned, without immediately labeling it as quitting or giving up.

I think it’s okay to dream big but it’s also okay to protect your peace. Growth doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like consistency. Sometimes it looks like rest. Sometimes it looks like simply not making life harder than it already is.

So if you’re heading into 2026 feeling pressure to have everything figured out, this is your reminder: workable expectations matter. Your mental health matters. And progress doesn’t have to be loud to be real.
