Raising Gen Z in a world that feels completely different

By JugglingNothing on

I remember when I was a kid, summers meant riding bikes, calling friends on a landline, and passing notes in class. Gen Z doesn’t know that world. They’ve grown up with smartphones, TikTok, and a constant stream of online content. Sometimes it feels like we’re raising kids in a completely different universe.

My niece spends an hour crafting a short TikTok video... picking sounds, editing, writing captions. To me, it looks like “just playing on her phone,” but it’s actually creativity, socializing, and performance all in one. Amazing, but also exhausting for them.

They value authenticity more than anything. My nephew hates it when people fake their personalities online and will call it out instantly. It’s a reminder that as parents, modeling honesty and empathy matters more than ever.

Mental health is a big deal too. Anxiety and stress are everywhere. My cousin struggled with the pressure of online comparisons, grades, followers, likes. Listening, validating feelings, and teaching small coping strategies made a huge difference.

Gen Z also wants to make an impact. My daughter organized a local cleanup with friends. It was chaotic, but it taught leadership, responsibility, and empathy. Let them explore, fail safely, and follow what matters to them.

The world has changed fast, and Gen Z’s experiences are unlike ours. Raising them isn’t about control, it’s about patience, empathy, and learning alongside them. Meeting them where they are can make all the difference.
