Would You Attend the Wedding of Someone You No Longer Trust?
By Charlotte on
A few years ago, I became close friends with someone I met through work. At first, she was funny, outgoing, and the kind of person who made every plan feel exciting.
Over time, I started noticing another side of her. She would tell me private things about her friends, change stories depending on who was listening, and suddenly become apologetic whenever someone confronted her.
Eventually, I realized I didn’t trust her. I tried explaining why I needed distance, but she apologized, promised things would change, and somehow pulled me back into the friendship.
Nothing really changed.
I slowly stopped reaching out, and we haven’t spoken in almost a year. Then, out of nowhere, I received an invitation to her wedding.
Part of me wonders if she genuinely misses the friendship. Another part thinks I may simply be another name on the guest list or that she expects things to return to normal without addressing what happened.
I don’t want to attend, but I also don’t want another long conversation filled with excuses and promises. I’m thinking of politely declining without explaining myself again.
Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would you simply RSVP no or send a short message wishing her well?
