Sunflower Lanyards - What are they and how can they help?
By Modern Family Travel on
🌻 Have You Heard of the Sunflower Lanyard at Airports?
The Sunflower Lanyard is a simple tool that lets airport staff know you or your child may have a hidden disability. This can include autism, ADHD, anxiety, sensory differences, PTSD, or other invisible challenges.
It’s a quiet way to signal, “I might need a little extra patience or support.”
✈️ How It Can Help
When staff recognize the sunflower, they may:
• Speak more clearly or slowly
• Offer extra time in lines
• Give simple directions
• Provide a calmer, more understanding approach
It doesn’t guarantee skipping security lines or early boarding (that’s separate through TSA Cares or airline disability services), but it often makes interactions smoother and less stressful.
🌻 Where to Get One
• Many airports offer them for free at information desks or customer service counters
• Some airports allow you to request one ahead of time
• You can also purchase one online and reuse it for future trips
You do not need proof or paperwork. If it would help you, you can wear it.
🌎 How Many Airports Participate?
The program started in the UK and has grown worldwide. There are now hundreds of participating airports across more than 30 countries.
In the U.S., more and more major airports are joining each year. While not every airport officially participates, awareness of the sunflower symbol is growing quickly — even internationally.
🌻 Why This Matters
Airports can be loud, crowded, and overwhelming. Something as small as a lanyard can reduce stress and help you feel supported without having to explain yourself over and over.
Have you used the sunflower lanyard before? I’d love to hear your experience. 💛✈️
