Eat fewer meals... people with obesity say it either helped a lot… or backfired. Why?

I keep seeing the advice “just eat fewer meals” come up, and the experiences people share about it are all over the place.
Some people say reducing meals finally worked for them. They talk about having fewer cravings, less snacking, and better control once they switched to two meals a day. For them, fewer meals meant more structure and less food noise.
But others describe the opposite. I’ve read posts where people say skipping meals made them constantly hungry, more focused on food, and more likely to overeat later. A few even say it triggered binge eating and made managing obesity harder, not easier.
What stood out to me is that many people say it wasn’t really about the number of meals. They say the real difference came from food quality and total intake, more protein, fewer ultra-processed foods, and a routine they could actually sustain. Some mentioned that fewer meals only worked *after* those things were in place.
If you’ve tried eating fewer meals, did it help long-term or backfire?
What made it work or not work for you?
