Trying to manage my moods without losing the people I love

By JugglingNothing on

Some days I wake up already exhausted by my own emotions. I get moody, irritable, overwhelmed, and a part of me wants to fight it so badly like if I just push harder, it’ll go away. Most times, it doesn’t. It overpowers me, and I hate how much it can spill into my relationships. I’ve had moments where it genuinely felt like the people I care about were on the verge of walking away.

What I don’t say enough, though, is thank you. Thank you to the people in my life who try to understand my state, even when I don’t explain it well. Thank you to those who embrace me as I am, not just when I’m stable or “easy” to be around. That grace has kept me grounded more times than they probably realize.

I’m diagnosed with bipolar, and while the moods are still very real, I’ve learned that control doesn’t mean erasing them. For me, the most practical way I manage this is creating space between the feeling and my reaction.

I’ve learned to communicate early. Saying “I’m not okay today, I might be quiet” causes way less damage than lashing out and apologizing later.

I’m still moody. I still mess up. But I’m no longer letting every emotion drive the wheel. I’m learning how to ride the wave instead of drowning in it.
