Irritability makes social plans feel impossible sometimes

By Real Ray C on

There are days when making plans sounds great. I genuinely want to show up, see friends, be normal. Then the day comes and my tolerance is just… gone. Little things start setting me off. Noise feels louder than it should. People talking over each other makes my skin crawl. Even being asked simple questions can feel overwhelming.

What’s frustrating is that the irritability doesn’t always come with sadness or obvious mania. Sometimes I’m not “up” or “down,” I’m just overstimulated and on edge. But from the outside, it probably looks like I’m being moody or distant.

I’ll force myself to go because I don’t want to disappoint anyone. Then I spend the whole time fighting the urge to snap, feeling trapped, counting minutes until I can leave. If I cancel, I feel guilty. If I go, I feel resentful. Either way, it’s exhausting.

The hardest part is explaining that it’s not about the people I care about them. It’s about my brain being overloaded and my emotions running hot without my permission.

Posting this here because I know others with bipolar get this. How do you handle social commitments when the irritability shows up out of nowhere?
