Does depression make anyone else feel like they’re only pretending to react..

By Charlotte on

Lately, I feel like I’m watching myself go through life instead of actually living it. A friend invited me to a concert recently. Everyone was laughing and singing, and I smiled whenever someone looked at me. Inside, though, I felt nothing. I spent most of the night waiting for it to end so I could go home. The same thing happens during serious moments. Someone in my family recently shared upsetting news, and I knew how I was supposed to respond. I asked questions and sounded concerned, but I couldn’t actually feel the concern. That scared me because I know I care about them. I just can’t seem to reach that feeling anymore. Sometimes I make random plans or stay out later than I should, hoping that excitement or fear will make me feel something. It never works. I come home feeling just as empty, except now I’m also worried that I’m making unsafe choices because I’m desperate to break through the numbness. I don’t think I’m heartless. It feels more like something inside me has shut down, and I’ve gotten good at acting normal so nobody notices.
