I can’t control my stressful job but I changed my home environment and it helped my anxiety a lot

My workplace is busy and stressful. It’s loud; there are constant conversations, notifications, deadlines, and that feeling that you always have to be “on.” Even when the day ended, my mind didn’t really shut off. I would come home still feeling tense, overstimulated, and exhausted..

At some point I realized something: I may not be able to control my work environment, but I can control the space I come home to.

So I started making small changes in my apartment. Nothing dramatic. I just tried to make it a low-stimulation place where my brain could finally rest.

I switched to softer lighting instead of bright overhead lights. I stopped leaving the TV running all the time. I cleared out some clutter so the space felt calmer. Sometimes when I get home now, I just sit in silence for a few minutes instead of jumping into more noise..

It might sound simple, but the difference surprised me... After a day of feeling overstimulated and mentally “on” the whole time, walking into a quiet, dim, comfortable place helps my body settle down. It’s like my nervous system finally gets permission to relax.

Anxiety has taught me that no one can be "on" all the time, even if the world expects it. We need spaces where we can reset...

I can’t redesign my workplace, but I can protect my peace at home. And honestly, that small shift has helped my anxiety more than I expected.
