I used to wake up early for work with no problem...now Insomnia has completely changed that

By Eli Mercer on

In my early working years, waking up early was just… normal. Alarm goes off, I’m up, maybe tired but functional. I didn’t think twice about it. These days, it feels like a completely different life.

Insomnia slowly crept in, and now mornings are the hardest part of my day. I’ll lie in bed exhausted all night, watching the clock, finally fall asleep, and then my alarm hits like a cruel joke. My body feels heavy, my brain feels foggy, and getting out of bed feels physically painful not lazy, not unmotivated, just completely drained.

What makes it worse is knowing I used to do this. I know what “normal” sleep feels like, and that comparison messes with my head. I start blaming myself, wondering what I did wrong, or why my body won’t cooperate anymore. People say things like “just go to bed earlier” or “try harder to wake up,” and it makes me feel like they don’t get it at all.

Insomnia isn’t just about not sleeping; it bleeds into everything. Work performance, mood, memory, patience. I want to be the person who can wake up early again, but right now I’m just trying to survive the days after nights that don’t rest me.

I’m wondering how many of you relate to this shift going from someone who could wake up easily to someone who now struggles every single morning.
