I didn’t fix my sleep with one trick… I fixed it by noticing what I was doing wrong every night

A while back I had one of those weeks where sleep just kept slipping further away.
I would go to bed tired, but the moment I lay down, my brain would feel like it had just started its day. I kept thinking I needed a “sleep hack,” something quick to fix it.
Instead, I ended up paying attention to everything around my sleep instead of just sleep itself.
One thing I noticed first was my environment was working against me.
My room wasn’t actually dark. Not really. There was always some glow from a screen, a charger light, or something in the background. Once I fixed that, falling asleep got slightly easier, even if everything else stayed the same.
I also realized I was still “on” right before bed. Scrolling, watching something, checking messages. My brain was basically going from high stimulation straight into trying to shut down. No transition.
So I started changing the wind-down instead of forcing sleep.
Quieter room. Less screen time before bed. Cooler temperature. Sometimes just low background sound instead of silence when my thoughts were loud.
I also became more consistent with when I went to bed. Not perfect, but at least not random anymore.
Caffeine timing mattered more than I expected too. I didn’t think a late cup in the afternoon would carry over, but it did.
The funny part is, I was explaining all this to a coworker, and she just said, “That’s literally what we do for babies.”
And she’s right. It’s not complicated. It’s structure, not effort.
I still don’t sleep perfectly every night, but it stopped feeling like a fight.
More like I finally stopped working against myself without realizing it.
