Mental noise is the loudest part of my ADHD

By JugglingNothing on

The hardest part for me isn’t hyperactivity or being distracted by my phone; it’s the mental noise.

My brain is never quiet. There’s always something playing in the background: unfinished thoughts, random ideas, worries, reminders, and songs on loop. Even when I’m trying to focus on one simple task, it feels like ten different conversations are happening at the same time.

I’ll sit down to work, fully intending to concentrate, and suddenly my mind jumps from what I’m doing, to something I forgot last week, to a future scenario that doesn’t even matter right now. It’s not that I don’t care or I’m not trying; it’s that my brain won’t let me stay on one channel.

The mental noise gets worse when I’m stressed or tired. At night, it’s brutal. My body is exhausted, but my mind keeps replaying thoughts like it’s afraid of silence. I want rest, but my brain treats quiet like a threat.

What’s frustrating is how invisible this is. People see procrastination or inconsistency, but they don’t see the constant effort it takes just to filter thoughts and function. It’s exhausting in a way that’s hard to explain unless you live with it.
