Does anyone else hyperfixate on a food and then suddenly can’t stand it?

By Eli Mercer on

Not sure how else to explain this, but I’m wondering if anyone here relates. There are times when I eat something and really ike it like it becomes my safe food. I’ll eat it every day, sometimes multiple times a day, for almost a full week. It feels comforting, predictable, and easy. I don’t have to think about food as much when I’m in that phase.

But then… almost out of nowhere, after about a week, it’s like a switch flips. The thought of that same food suddenly makes me feel gross or uninterested. Even if nothing bad happened with it. Even if I know I liked it a few days ago. I’ll open the fridge or pantry, see it, and feel this immediate “nope.”

It messes with my head because it makes me feel ungrateful, dramatic, or like I can’t trust my own hunger or preferences. And then I’m stuck trying to find a new “acceptable” food, which is exhausting and stressful all over again. I don’t know if this is an ED thing, an anxiety thing, or just a human thing but it feels really lonely when it happens.
