How I learned to support my child through binge eating

By Charlotte on

As a mother, there’s nothing more helpless than watching your child struggle with an eating disorder. My son has battled binge eating since he was 11. For years, I watched him hide food, avoid going out, refuse photos, cover himself with jackets even in summer. He hated himself, and I hated seeing him suffer.

At first, I didn’t know how to help. I felt guilty, frustrated, and unsure if anything could change. But what I learned is that support, patience, and professional help can make a real difference.

We started by talking openly, without judgment, letting him know we loved him unconditionally. Then we connected with a therapist specializing in eating disorders. Small steps mattered: sharing meals together, creating routines without pressure, celebrating progress instead of perfection. Medication and nutrition counseling helped too, but what really helped was rebuilding his confidence and sense of control over his life.

Recovery isn’t linear. There are setbacks, and it can feel exhausting. But over time, the shame and fear lessen, and life slowly feels livable again.

To other parents reading this: you are not alone, and your child is not defined by this disorder. Seek support early, listen without judgment, and remind them every day that they are loved and that recovery is possible.

Your child’s future is bigger than their binge–restrict cycle. You can help them find it.
