No you don’t have to be thin to have an eating disorder

I wish more people understood this because it still gets misunderstood all the time.
Eating disorders are not defined by body size. You don’t have to look underweight, visibly sick, or “fit the stereotype” for what people imagine an eating disorder looks like. They are defined by behaviors, thoughts, and the relationship someone has with food and their body.
A lot of people are struggling in silence simply because they don’t look the way society expects someone with an eating disorder to look. That delay in recognition can make things worse, because it affects how quickly people get help or even whether they are taken seriously at all.
The reality is eating disorders exist across all body types. Someone can be in a larger body and still be severely restricting, bingeing, purging, or obsessing over food and weight. And someone in a smaller body might not necessarily have an eating disorder either. It’s not a visual diagnosis.
We need to move away from assumptions and start focusing on what people are actually experiencing mentally and behaviorally. Awareness matters because stereotypes are one of the biggest barriers to early support and treatment.
