My Eating Disorder Was Never Just About Food

By Charlotte on

Looking back, I can see that my eating disorder wasn't the beginning of my struggles. It was one of the ways I tried to cope with everything I was carrying. Over the years, I experienced trauma, loss, unhealthy relationships, and periods where I felt completely hopeless. I was incredibly hard on myself, and that pain showed up in my relationship with food. Sometimes I was restricted. Other times I overate. No matter what I did, I was trying to quiet emotions I didn't know how to process. For a long time, I believed changing my body would somehow fix my life. It never did. The real problem wasn't food; it was the pain I kept burying. Healing didn't happen overnight, and it certainly wasn't something I could do on my own. Recovery meant accepting help, being honest about what I was going through, and learning healthier ways to cope. My faith became an important source of strength, but I also needed support, accountability, and people who genuinely cared about my wellbeing. Today, I still have difficult days, but they no longer define me. I've learned that recovery isn't about becoming perfect. It's about choosing, over and over again, not to let the eating disorder make my decisions. If you're struggling, please don't believe you're beyond help. Whether your pain comes from trauma, grief, anxiety, or something else entirely, you deserve support. Recovery is possible, even if it doesn't feel that way today. I'm sharing this because I know how lonely eating disorders can be. If my story reminds even one person that healing is worth fighting for, then it's worth telling.
