My friend needs to manage high blood pressure without risking their ED recovery

By Real Ray C on

I’m sharing this with my friend’s permission. They spent years recovering from restrictive eating caused by an intense fear that certain foods would harm them. They’ve been doing well for several years and eating without constant anxiety. They were recently diagnosed with high blood pressure. Their doctor recommended reducing sodium, exercising, and losing weight. Since that appointment, they’ve started checking every label, hesitating before meals and worrying that eating the wrong thing could make their health worse. The fear isn’t about appearance, but the restriction feels familiar. They have an eating-disorder therapist and plan to discuss it, and they may also ask about working with an ED-informed dietitian. Has anyone managed a health condition involving dietary changes without slipping back into rigid food rules?
