Does Anyone Else Want a Passion but Feel Too Flat to Find One?
By Charlotte on
I’ve been thinking about the advice people give when someone feels bored or disconnected: “Just find a hobby.” It sounds simple, but anhedonia can make even potentially enjoyable activities feel like work.
I still believe people with schizophrenia can have real passions. Struggling to feel pleasure doesn’t mean we have no interests, abilities, or curiosity. Sometimes there may be a small part of us that wants something meaningful, even when the excitement isn’t there yet.
Maybe a new interest doesn’t have to begin with a huge burst of motivation. It could start with watching one video, drawing badly for ten minutes, trying a simple recipe, walking somewhere different, or returning to something we once enjoyed.
It also doesn’t have to become productive or impressive. There is nothing wrong with trying something and deciding it isn’t for you. The point is simply to give yourself another experience without placing too much pressure on it.
