Best fruits for diabetes? Here’s what actually works for me
By Charlotte on
I see a lot of confusion around fruit and diabetes, so I wanted to share what’s been working for me and what I’ve learned along the way.
Apples are one of my go-to options. They have a low glycemic index and a good amount of fiber, which helps slow down how fast sugar hits your system. I’ve noticed they don’t spike my blood sugar the way some other fruits can, especially when I eat them with the skin.
Other fruits that have worked well for me are pears, blueberries, and oranges. They’re not “no sugar,” but they tend to be more manageable if you’re watching your levels. Blueberries in particular are great in small portions.
The biggest thing for me hasn’t just been the type of fruit, but how I eat it.
Portion size matters a lot. Even healthy fruit can spike your blood sugar if you overdo it. I try to keep servings moderate and pair fruit with something like protein or fat when I can, just to keep things more balanced.
Also, I’ve learned to avoid fruit juice as much as possible. It’s way easier to overconsume, and without the fiber, it hits your system much faster.
Everyone’s body reacts a little differently, so it really comes down to checking your own blood sugar and seeing what works for you.
