Rice and Diabetes. I Stopped Avoiding It and Started Learning How to Eat It Smarter
By JugglingNothing on
When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, rice felt like something I had to completely give up. I avoided it for a while because I assumed it would always push my blood sugar too high.
But over time, I started paying closer attention to how my body actually responded instead of relying only on general advice.
What I noticed is that rice doesn’t behave the same way in every situation. A large serving on its own tends to raise my glucose quickly, but when I build a meal around it with protein, vegetables, and some healthy fat, the rise feels more gradual and manageable.
That shift made a big difference for me. Instead of removing rice entirely, I started focusing on how much I ate and what I ate it with.
I also experimented with different types and preparation methods. Some varieties seemed easier on my numbers than others, and meals with cooled or reheated rice sometimes behaved a bit differently for me as well, though not in a dramatic way every time.
What helped most was stopping the “all or nothing” thinking. Cutting rice out completely felt unrealistic long-term, but learning how to portion it and balance it made it something I could still enjoy without feeling like I was losing control of my health.
For me, diabetes management became less about avoiding specific foods and more about understanding how to build meals that keep my numbers steady.
