My HbA1c was over 10...The simple habit that helped me take back control

By Real Ray C on

I knew my blood sugar was too high, but I also knew I had slowly let some healthy habits disappear from my routine. Walking was something I used to do regularly, but life got busy and I stopped making it a priority. Eventually, I decided to start again. Nothing extreme. No complicated workout plan. I simply began walking for about 45 minutes every day, either in the morning or evening. At the same time, I became more mindful about the small choices that add up. I stopped adding sugar to my tea, reduced sweets, and started paying closer attention to my meals. With my doctor’s guidance and these lifestyle changes, my numbers began improving. After a couple of months, my HbA1c dropped significantly, and my daily glucose readings moved much closer to my target range. The biggest lesson I learned is that diabetes management is not about finding one perfect solution. It is about combining the right tools: medication when needed, regular monitoring, better food choices, and habits you can actually maintain. Sometimes we underestimate simple things like walking because they don't feel dramatic. But a habit repeated every day can create a huge difference over time. I also learned that lowering blood sugar is only part of the goal. Doing it safely matters too. Monitoring your levels and staying connected with your healthcare team are important parts of the journey. If you feel like you have fallen off track, don't assume you have failed. Sometimes the best step forward is simply restarting one healthy habit. What was the one change that helped you improve your diabetes control the most?
