Are Diabetic Socks Actually Worth It, or Is a Good Pair of Socks Enough?
By JugglingNothing on
My mom has lived with Type 2 diabetes for years, and foot comfort has become something she pays much more attention to than she used to.
She once bought a pack of socks marketed specifically for people with diabetes. They were soft enough, but the fit was so loose that they moved around inside her shoes. She eventually went back to a thicker, comfortable pair of regular socks that stayed in place.
That got me wondering. Are diabetic socks actually different enough to make a meaningful difference, or is the "diabetic" label sometimes more marketing than anything else?
From what I've learned, the label isn't necessarily the important part. What matters more is how the sock fits and feels on your feet.
A good pair shouldn't squeeze the ankle, leave deep marks, bunch up inside the shoe, or have rough seams that constantly rub against the skin. Breathable material can also help manage moisture.
This becomes especially important for someone who has reduced sensation in their feet. If you don't feel a blister or irritated area right away, a small problem can be easier to overlook.
My mom now pays more attention to the fit of her socks, shoes, and feet rather than automatically buying whatever has "diabetic" printed on the package.
So I'm curious about other people's experiences.
Do you specifically buy diabetic socks, or have you found that a comfortable, properly fitting regular sock works just as well?
