Does anyone else feel like they’re “too much” for people

By Eli Mercer on

I don’t have a huge circle. I have two friends I talk to regularly, and honestly I’m grateful for that. But even with them, I can tell they get tired of me sometimes. The difference now is I don’t take it as personally as I used to. They’ll say something like “I’m gonna go be alone and quiet for a while” and I actually respect that. It took me a while to get there though. At first it felt like rejection. Then I realized something kind of uncomfortable but also helpful. I get tired of myself too. My brain is loud. Constant thoughts, constant talking, jumping from one thing to another. Even I need a break from it sometimes. That’s why I’ve found things like gardening or simple repetitive activities that help turn the volume down for a bit. So when someone else needs that space, I get it more now. That said, it still stings sometimes. Especially with family members who don’t have ADHD. They seem to hit their limit with me pretty quickly when I’m just being myself. High energy, talking a lot, getting excited about random things. It can feel like I’m being “managed” instead of accepted. But I’ve been trying to reframe that. If someone can’t handle me at my baseline, that says more about their limits than my worth. I’ve lost a lot of friendships over the years. Some people got tired of my energy. Some couldn’t keep up with how much I talk. And honestly, sometimes I got bored too and drifted away. It goes both ways. I’ve even scared off potential friendships just by being fully myself too early. That part is frustrating because it makes you question whether you should tone yourself down just to keep people around. I don’t really have a perfect answer yet. I’m trying to find a balance between being authentic and being aware of how I come across. And I’m trying to appreciate the people who stay, even if they need breaks sometimes.
