The ADHD Hack That Helped Me Most Wasn't More Discipline
By Eli Mercer on
For the longest time, I thought my ADHD struggles came down to one thing: not trying hard enough.
So every time I got distracted, forgot a task, or couldn't stay focused, I'd tell myself to push harder. The problem was that no amount of willpower seemed to work for very long.
What eventually helped wasn't becoming more disciplined. It was changing my environment.
I've noticed that my focus improves when distractions are physically out of reach, when I work in short bursts instead of marathon sessions, and when I've had enough sleep. Exercise helps too, especially earlier in the day.
One thing that surprised me is that complete silence isn't always my friend. Sometimes my brain works better with a little background stimulation. Music, white noise, a busy café, or even walking while thinking can make it easier to stay engaged.
Body doubling has been another game changer. Just having another person nearby while I work often helps me stay on track without feeling like I'm forcing it.
None of these things are magic fixes, and they won't replace medication for everyone. But they've taught me that ADHD isn't always about trying harder. Sometimes it's about creating an environment that works with your brain instead of against it.
What's one change you've made that unexpectedly helped your focus?
