I Know My Brain Can Focus. I Just Can't Find the Switch.
By JugglingNothing on
A few times a year, my brain suddenly works the way I've always wished it would.
I can focus. I stay aware of what I'm doing. Things get done without me fighting myself every few minutes.
And then, just as suddenly, it's gone.
The frustrating part is that I know my brain is capable of doing this. I just can't figure out how to turn it on when I need it.
Most of the time, trying to focus feels like watching my attention dissolve almost immediately.
I end up doing things on autopilot, lose track of time, and sometimes barely notice things like hunger, cold, discomfort, or even what something tastes like.
I notice it most when I'm drawing. I'll look at the whole picture without really seeing it, repeat the same steps, or get completely stuck trying to come up with ideas.
Reading is similar. I'll finish a page and realize almost nothing registered. Writing can turn into staring at the screen or rewriting the same thought over and over.
Even gaming shows it. I'll react without thinking in fighting games or make random moves in turn-based games instead of actually planning.
I'm on medication, and it does help me want to draw, which I've loved since I was a kid, but it hasn't really fixed the focus problem.
The frustrating part is that I genuinely want to learn and improve. I know I enjoy these things. I know I can get better.
I just can't seem to find the switch that makes my brain engage.
And yes, I've watched plenty of ADHD productivity videos. I'll watch one, then another, then another... and suddenly I've spent an hour learning how to focus instead of actually doing what I wanted to do.
Has anyone else experienced those rare periods where your brain suddenly feels completely “normal”?
More importantly, has anything genuinely helped you make that state easier to access?
I'm much more interested in things that have actually worked for people than another list of generic productivity hacks.
