The ADHD signs I spent years calling personal failures

There wasn’t one dramatic moment that led me to an ADHD evaluation. I was already receiving support for anxiety when I started learning that ADHD can involve much more than difficulty paying attention.
Impulsive spending, eating without thinking, emotional reactions, task paralysis, and knowing what needed to be done but still being unable to start—it all sounded uncomfortably familiar.
I casually told my partner that I might have ADHD. His expression basically said, “You’re just realizing this?”
At my next appointment, I brought it up. We discussed my history, family background, and how these patterns were affecting my life. After a professional evaluation, I finally had an explanation for struggles I had spent years blaming on myself.
The diagnosis didn’t fix everything, but it gave me a better place to begin. I’m still losing my phone most mornings and finding it in the same spot, though.
