I Thought Using a Walker Would Take Away My Independence. I Was Wrong

By Charlotte on

I put off using a walker for much longer than I should have. Part of me felt like it meant I was giving something up. What I didn't expect was how much freedom it would actually give me. Instead of worrying about every uneven sidewalk or wondering where I could sit and rest, I started focusing on where I wanted to go. Finding the right walker made all the difference. Not every model felt stable, and I quickly learned that comfort, balance, and good brakes mattered far more than appearance. For people with cerebral palsy, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. What works well for one person may not feel safe or comfortable for another. That's why I always encourage people to work with a physical or occupational therapist before choosing a mobility aid. A good fit can improve confidence just as much as mobility. Looking back, I wish I had stopped worrying about what other people might think. Using a walker didn't make me less independent. It helped me stay active, conserve energy, and enjoy life more. Sometimes the right mobility aid doesn't limit your world. It helps you get more of it. Has a mobility aid ever changed your daily life for the better?
