My child smiles alot, but that doesn’t mean CP is always easy

One comment I hear often is, “Your child is always so happy!”
And honestly, I love that people notice my child’s joy.
But sometimes I wish they could also see the moments they don’t see.
The therapy sessions that are exhausting.
The days when muscles are tight, movements are harder, or frustration takes over.
A smile is real, but it isn’t the whole story.
Children with cerebral palsy are still children.
They laugh, get excited, feel proud, become frustrated, and have difficult days just like everyone else.
I think sometimes people unintentionally put pressure on kids with disabilities to always be brave and positive.
They hear things like, “Don’t let your disability hold you back,” or “You’re such an inspiration.”
Those words may be meant kindly, but kids also need permission to say, “Today is hard.”
They don’t have to hide their struggles to make other people comfortable.
One thing we’ve learned as a family is that every emotion deserves space.
A happy moment should be celebrated, but a difficult moment should also be supported.
Our children are not here to prove that disability is easy.
They are here to live full lives with all the emotions that come with being human.
So yes, my child smiles a lot.
But that smile is only one part of a much bigger and more beautiful story.
