Has Anyone Here Been Evaluated for Cerebral Palsy as an Adult?

By Real Ray C on

A close friend of mine is 36 and was recently referred to a neurologist. He has spent most of his life feeling that movement takes more effort for him than it seems to take for other people. He was born prematurely after a difficult delivery. He walked later than expected, wore orthotics, frequently bumped into things, and had swallowing and coordination difficulties during childhood. Those challenges never completely disappeared. His back and legs remain tight, his movements can be shaky, and walking on a treadmill requires intense concentration instead of feeling automatic. Exercise is also difficult. He injured his leg while trying to become more active, and movements such as standing from a chair or holding a push-up position can cause trembling and muscle twitching. Over the past decade, fatigue has made everything harder. Some people around him think anxiety is causing him to overanalyze his body, but his mother believes his childhood history deserves a closer look. He knows these symptoms could have several explanations and isn’t trying to diagnose himself. He plans to discuss them with the neurologist and ask whether additional assessment is appropriate.
