She Gets things done... Working alongside a hardworking woman with down syndrome
By Charlotte on
I keep coming back to something someone said at work: “She gets things done.” And honestly, that describes a coworker of mine with Down syndrome better than anything else.
She shows up every day ready to work. She takes her tasks seriously, stays focused, and follows through. No excuses. No cutting corners. You can see the effort in everything she does, and over time, that consistency really stands out.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t fully appreciate it at first. I had my own expectations about speed and how things should be done, and when it felt different, I got frustrated. But that was more about me than her.
Because the reality is, she doesn’t avoid work. She leans into it. She keeps going until the job is done. And that kind of work ethic is hard to ignore.
At some point, I had to decide whether I was going to stay stuck in that frustration or adjust. Choosing to meet her halfway changed things. I’m less stressed, and I’ve gained real respect for how she works.
Do I still have moments where I vent? Sure. That’s normal. But now it’s just regular work stress, not about doubting her ability.
If you’re working with someone who has Down syndrome, don’t base your judgment on first impressions. Look at their effort, their consistency, and how they show up.
Sometimes, the most dependable person on the team is the one you didn’t fully understand at first.
