Choosing your path after a high-risk down syndrome diagnosis

By Charlotte on

I want to share a story that really stuck with me. I know a woman whose first child was born with multiple birth defects and, sadly, passed away at six years old. Despite the heartbreak, she looks back and says those six years were filled with happiness and joy she would never have known if she had chosen to terminate the pregnancy. Later, she got pregnant again. This time, her doctor ran tests and gave her terrible odds saying her baby was also at high risk for multiple birth defects. But the baby came into the world healthy, thriving, and strong. The point here is simple: this is your decision. Nobody else can make it for you. You follow your heart, your values, and what feels right for your family. There is no “one-size-fits-all” answer, and that’s okay. For anyone facing a prenatal diagnosis that shows a high chance of Down syndrome, remember: people with Down syndrome can grow up to lead full, meaningful lives, filled with love, achievement, and joy. They are more than a diagnosis. Whatever you decide, approach it with your heart and mind open. And if you choose to bring your child into the world, know that the journey can be incredibly rewarding. Your baby is your baby, and your love matters most.
